OTTAWA, January 25, 2008 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and My Organic Baby Inc. are warning the public not to consume My Organic Baby brand cereal described below because these products may be rancid.

All lot codes of the following My Organic Baby brand cereal with Best By dates of April 2008 (04-2008) and June 2008 (06-2008) are affected by this alert:

There has been one reaction associated with the consumption of these products.

If the cereal has an unusual odour or smells 'off', it should not be consumed. If an infant has been fed any of the products described above, discontinue feeding this cereal and monitor for symptoms. Consumption of rancid food may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If you have any concerns please seek medical attention.

My Organic Baby Inc, Vaughan, ON, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

Year business established? Custom Made For Kids became an official company in the late summer of 2006. It was at this time that we began writing and developing our book, hiring our illustrator, creating our website, etc. We didn’t officially “open for business” and start selling the book until August 1st of 2007.

What did you do before you started your company? We were both moms first and foremost, but Sarah Rivera was trained as a lawyer and Sarah Headrick was a physical trainer and nutritionist.

What was your motivation behind starting your own company? We wanted to work for

ourselves and to have a “family friendly” schedule.Most of what we do for the business, we can do

from our respective homes so we can still pick up our kids from school and attend their events

and volunteer at their schools.

What do you enjoy most about running your own business? The fact that the product we chose to create (a personalized children’s book) is such a joyful product and people are so appreciative and complimentary when they receive the book -- it makes all of the hard work worthwhile!

What is the most challenging aspect of running your own business? That’s easy -- balancing our family lives with our work lives. There is always someone who could use more attention and/or there is always more marketing to do!

What programs/services as a parent do you use in the community? Both of us belong to a women’s organization in our community called Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club. We have both been active members for over 4 years now and the club has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for families with cancer and for children who are physically challenged.

If we only knew then what we know now….had we known that we would grow so quickly – we may have tried to bring in a third partner from the start!

Serious Head Injuries Prompt Recall of Bumbo Baby Sitter Seats - New Warnings and Instructions to Be Provided To Consumers

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Bumbo “Baby Sitter” Seats

Units: About 1 million

Manufacturer: Bumbo International, of South Africa

Hazard: If the seat is placed on a table, countertop, chair, or other elevated surface, young children can arch their backs, flip out of the Bumbo seat, and fall onto the floor, posing a risk of serious head injuries.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC has received 28 reports of young children falling out of the Bumbo Baby Sitter seat, including three skull fractures, which occurred when children fell out of chairs that had been placed on tables.

Description: The bottom of the children’s seat is round and flat with a diameter of about 15 inches. It is constructed of a single piece of molded foam and comes in yellow, blue, purple, pink, aqua, and lime green. The seat has leg holes and seat back that wraps completely around the child. On the front of the seat in raised lettering is the word “Bumbo” with the image of an elephant on top. The bottom of the seat has the following words: “Manufactured by Bumbo South Africa Material: Polyurethane World Patent No. PCT: ZA/1999/00030.” The back of the seat contains the following “WARNING” – “Never use on a raised surface. Never use as a car seat or bath seat. Designed for floor level use only. Never leave your baby unattended as the seat is not designed to be totally restrictive and may not prevent release of your baby in the event of vigorous movement.”

Sold by: Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, USA Babies and various other toy and children’s stores nationwide, and various online sellers, from August 2003 through October 2007 for about $40.

Manufactured in: South Africa

Remedy: Consumers should never use the infant seat on a table, countertop, chair, or other elevated surface. Consumers can contact Bumbo to obtain new warning label stickers and instructions, free of charge. The new warning label will state: “WARNING – Prevent Falls; Never use on any elevated surface.” Consumers should use the Bumbo seat at ground level, but should never leave a child unattended.

Kolcraft Recalls Play Yards After the Death of a 10-Month-Old Child

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Kolcraft Enterprises Inc., of Chicago, Ill., is voluntarily recalling about 425,000 infant play yards following the death of a child.

CPSC received a report of a 10-month old boy who strangled on the changing table’s restraint strap that was hanging down into Kolcraft’s “Sesame Beginnings” Travel Play Yard where the child was located.

Twelve different Kolcraft play yards are included in this recall. All of the play yards have raised changing tables with a restraint strap that forms a loop beneath the changing table, posing a strangulation hazard to a child in the play yard.

In addition to the strangulation hazard with the changing table restraint strap, one play yard also has a raised cradle that rocks back and forth. A child can roll and get trapped against the side of the cradle in the Contours 3-in-1 Play Yard. If that happens, a child can suffocate. Kolcraft has received 45 reports of children rolling to the side of the rocking cradle attachment.

The recalled play yards were sold in a variety of colors and patterns. Play yards and model numbers included in this recall are listed in the chart below. The model number is printed on a white sticker located on one of the feet of the play yard. They were manufactured in China.

The play yards were sold at retail stores nationwide (as well as in Canada) from January 2001 through September 2007 for between $50 and $130.

Consumers should immediately stop using the changing tables and rocking cradle and contact the firm for instructions on receiving a free non-looped replacement strap for the changing table and a free repair kit to secure the base of the cradle. Consumers should immediately cut off and remove the existing changing table restraint strap. Consumers should always remove the raised changing table and cradle or bassinet before placing a child in a play yard.

A free repair kit for the rocking cradle will be sent to consumers separate from the replacement strap.

About 1 Million Simplicity Cribs Recalled Due To Failures Resulting in Infant Deaths

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is announcing today a voluntary recall with Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa., of about 1 million cribs. The drop-side can detach from the crib, which can create a dangerous gap and lead to the entrapment and suffocation of infants. CPSC is aware of two deaths in Simplicity manufactured cribs with older style hardware, including a 9-month-old child and a 6-month-old child, where the drop-side was installed upside down. CPSC is also aware of seven infant entrapments and 55 incidents in these cribs.

CPSC is also investigating the death of a 1-year-old child in a Simplicity crib with newer style hardware, in which the drop-side was installed upside down. CPSC is warning parents and caregivers to check all Simplicity cribs to make sure the drop-side is installed right side up.

The drop-side failures result from both the hardware and crib design, which allow consumers to unintentionally install the drop-side upside down. This, in turn, can weaken the hardware and cause the drop-side to detach from the crib. When the drop-side detaches, it creates a gap in which infants can become entrapped.

CPSC is also aware of two incidents that occurred when the drop-side was correctly installed with older style hardware, though the upside down installation greatly increases the risk of failure.

The recalled Simplicity crib models include: Aspen 3 in 1, Aspen 4 in 1, Nursery-in-a-Box, Crib N Changer Combo, Chelsea and Pooh 4 in 1. The recall also involves the following Simplicity cribs that used the Graco logo: Aspen 3 in 1, Ultra 3 in 1, Ultra 4 in1, Ultra 5 in 1, Whitney and the Trio.

The recalled cribs have one of the following model numbers, which can be found on the envelope attached to the mattress support and on the label attached to the headboard: 4600, 4605, 4705, 5000, 8000, 8324, 8800, 8740, 8910, 8994, 8050, 8750, 8760, and 8996.

The cribs, which were made in China, were sold in department stores, children’s stores and mass merchandisers nationwide from January 1998 through May 2007 for between $100 and $300.

As an immediate precaution, consumers should check to see if the drop-side is installed right side up. To do this, check to see that the slightly rounded rail with the decorative groove is installed at the top and the plain rail is on the bottom. Next, consumers should make sure the drop-side is securely attached to the tracks in all four corners.

If the drop-side is installed upside down or not securely attached, consumers should stop using the crib immediately. Incorrect installation can cause permanent damage to the hardware and re-installing the drop-side using the same hardware is unsafe.

Consumers should check to see if their crib contains the recalled hardware. Recalled hardware has a flexible tab at the bottom of the lower tracks and the top of the lower tracks are open. Newer hardware, which is not subject to the recall, has the flexible tab located at the top of the lower track, and a permanent stop at the bottom.

Consumers who have a crib with older style hardware can receive a free repair by immediately contacting Simplicity toll-free at (888) 593-9274 between 8:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. ET Monday through Thursday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET on Friday, and between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET on Saturday, or by visiting the firm’s Web site at www.simplicityforchildren.com

Consumers who have a crib with newer style hardware and have installed the drop-side upside down or have broken hardware, should also contact Simplicity immediately.

I am lucky that I have seven weeks to go before baby comes, but have been put on reduced activity due to some health concerns. Baby & me are ok, just needing to be extra cautious, so I've been on the internet ALOT and wrapping up work stuff and trying to take it easy.

For the last 2 months I've been told to "take it easy" a lot by doctors, but have a clearer understanding of what that means now --ie. I am not allowed to drive, must rest lots, mustn't bend over and a few more things...

I have found a great checklist to ask your careprovider when the idea of bedrest or stopping some activities is mentioned during pregnancy. Sidelines.org is a non-profit organization providing international support for women and their families experiencing complicated pregnancies and premature births. Check out there checklist for bedrest under their resources page.

They also offer chats for moms to be on bedrest, resources, books and even colouring books for older children about what is happening.

Dorel Car Seat Recall Widens

Sears Canada says certain childrens car seats are potentially dangerous because the centre-front adjuster strap could loosen, which might reduce the effectiveness of the seat in a crash.

Dorel Distribution Canada, which provided the seats, will give consumers a repair kit to replace the strap.

Sears sold some of the Eddie Bauer and Safety 1st seats through its department stores, catalogues and online between June 2004 and September 2007.

Safety Warning:Paediatricians warn against backyard trampolines

The Canadian Paediatric Society, a national professional association, representing more than 2,500 paediatricians, that advocates for the health needs of children and youth has just recommended that trampolines should not be used in homes or in playgrounds.

Although they are easily available and growing in popularity, the risks associated with backyard trampolines are just too high, warns the statement.

“Trampolines are not a safe recreational activity for children and youth. They should not be used as play equipment in playgrounds, at home or at the cottage, ” says Toronto paediatrician Dr. John Philpott, co-author of the statement.

Trampoline injuries are on the rise, and the majority of them affect children and youth. Between 1990 and 2001 in Canada, trampoline injuries requiring hospitalization increased 56%.

“We’re concerned not only with the increase in trampoline-related injuries, but the severity of those injuries,” said Dr. Claire LeBlanc, chair of the CPS Healthy Active Living and Sport Medicine Committee. “Children often break bones or dislocate joints and frequently require surgery. Head injuries are also common, and in some cases injuries to the neck or back can cause paralysis or death.”

Many injuries occur when there is more than one child on the trampoline at the same time, and when children are doing “tricks” such as flips or somersaults, or when children fall off the trampoline, but the majority of injuries still happen when a child slips or falls the wrong way on the trampoline itself.

“Even with safety measures in place, such as parental supervision, spotters or net enclosures, there is no guarantee against injury. Children can be injured by falling on the trampoline itself,” said Dr. Lynne Warda, chair of the CPS Injury Prevention Committee. “Trampolines can still be very dangerous.”

Additional recommendations:

Trampolines should not be regarded as play equipment and should not be part of outdoor playgrounds.
Physicians should advocate for legislation to require warnings of trampoline dangers to be put on product labels.
More research on trampoline injuries sustained in supervised settings, such as schools, gym clubs and training program, should be conducted to assess the risk of injury.

Toys "R" Us, in both Canada and US has recalled vinyl bibs throughout their stores.

The bibs supplied by Hamco Inc. and marketed under the Koala Baby, Especially for Baby and Disney Baby labels have tested for high levels of lead.

This past May the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning about these vinyl bibs.

I just found out about Snapfish, a leading online photo service. I saw their ad in Parenting magazine and then a friend emailed me the info for my first prints for free. Not sure why I'd never heard about the low priced prints and
really really amazing personalized gifts. I have just placed my first order and will be placing lots more, including some gifts like the collages, where you can add up to 30 pictures & have it printed like a poster.

Upper Canada Mall Event: Primp My Stroller, August 1-12

Prenatal Plus offers several different prenatal programs depending on your situation: one for first time parents, a refresher programs (for couples having their second child) or a multiples class (for couples having twins or triplets). They also offer a prenatal yoga class.

A Baby’s Coming prenatal class provides information on the process of labour and delivery, comfort measures, when things don’t go as planned and immediate care of mom and baby following birth. Refresher and VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) are also available for repeat patients.

York Central offers several different prenatal programs. For labour and delivery, there are the “Realities in Childbirth” Prenatal classes for couples expecting their first child and a Condensed Labour Workshop (a single class for couples needing a refresher or condensed program). There is also a Prenatal Breastfeeding Class, an Infant Care Workshop, a Pre/postnatal fitness class and a Sibling Class that offers activities related to becoming a brother or sister.

There are two different classes available. Prenatal classes for couples –York Region's prenatal program is an eight week series of 2 hour classes designed for pregnant women and their partners/coaches. And, the Special Delivery Club which are prenatal classes geared to the unique needs of single woman and teens.

Keeping Cool

I normally can handle the heat of summer, but being nearly 7 months pregnant, I've tuned into a bit of a complainer about this heat wave!

I'm sure many of you are just as cranky, hot and pregnant as me and here are some local places to cool off. (Please email us if you want to add somewhere!) All the Splash Pads are free to attend!

Aurora Splash Pad - Open from 9am-9pm. Bring a folding chair, so you can watch your little one run around and get soaked! You may even want to run under yourself!

(New) Mount Albert Splash Pad -- We haven't checked this one out yet, as it has just opened. But from what we can tell, it looks amazing. Please check times though, as the Splash Pad opens later & closes early during water bans.

Richmond Hill Splash Pads -- Various Locations throughout, so check out the Town of Richmond Hill's site.

Newmarket - Gorman Outdoor Pool - This pool is outdoor and has a special preschooler swim on most days. Please check the schedule for pricing and times.

Here are some other ways to keep cool...

For toddlers get a bucket of water and some clean adult size paint brushes and have your toddler "paint" the bricks or use the water to clean their bikes. Toddlers love to feel useful and have mommy-daddy type 'jobs' to do.

Ice Cube Time - Fill a plastic bowl with ice and have your toddler play with it. Watch it melt, smash it against the sidewalk --- make up a fun game with the ice, while learning science.

(Always ensure proper supervision with all activities, especially water activities!)

Hazard: These pacifiers fail to meet federal safety standards for pacifiers. The pacifiers' crystals can separate easily, posing an aspiration and ingestion hazard to young children.

From Center Stage.... An Open house!

At Center Stage, we encourage students to discover their own voice by singing to their full potential. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned singer, the object of the class is to ease shy-ness, strengthen stage presence, improve your voice and inspire a positive attitude through singing. Students will learn breathing, warm up techniques and effective performance and communication skills. Classes are shaped to help participants believe in themselves, in and out of the class.

The studio offers over 2000 instrumental tracks to choose from for song selection or students can bring their own backup music. The classes are a fun and motivating musical experience for those who love to sing. At Center Stage it’s all about being in a positive environment where participants can feel at ease, learn and explore their fears and abilities while building confidence. Don’t worry, no talent is required and there will be no Simon Cowell tearing a strip off you. Each participant is unique and classes are geared to help students achieve their own personal goals. On the 9^th and final week of classes, Center Stage puts on a performance show, where participants are encouraged to invite family and friends for their debut.

This fall I will continue to teach my nine week sessions for girls. There is a growing interest for a Boys Rock class (ages 7-10) and a Girl Power class (ages 6-7). If you have children that fall into this age category and are interested in taking the class, please let me know as I would like to pilot these classes this fall and I only have 5 spots available for each class. I will also be starting up an adult women’s class on Sunday evenings from 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm for anyone who is interested. Private and semi private classes are available at various times during the days and evenings. Center Stage is also providing Corporate Workshops for women during the workday. CVS/pharmacy Announces Recall of Playskool Sippy Cups; Poses Choking Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Playskool Toddler “NoSpill” Sippy Cups

Units: About 84,000

Importer: CVS/pharmacy, of Woonsocket, R.I.

Hazard: Young children can chew through the plastic spout of the sippy cup, which can pose a choking hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 36 reports of toddlers chewing through the plastic spout of the sippy cup, resulting in one choking incident and three near-choking incidents. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves the Playskool Toddler “NoSpill” Sippy Cup. The 8-ounce cup is clear plastic with red trim, red and yellow handles, and a yellow tip; blue trim, blue and green handles and a green tip; or purple trim, purple and aqua handles, and an aqua tip. The serial number of the recalled cups is 382814, which appears on the back of the packaging.

Sold by: CVS stores nationwide from September 2006 through April 2007 for about $5.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should stop their children from using the cup immediately and return it to any CVS store for a full refund.

We came across Debra Holtzman's suggestions for 10 things that every parent should keep in their car.

Although this list is an excellent start, we do believe a few things should be added:
-diaper wipes (you never know when you will need a wipe)
-grocery bag (you never know when you will have an accident that requires cleanup and a bag)
-an activity bag (you never know when you are going to be stuck in traffic with a cranky, bored child!)

	Name of product: Soft Blocks Tower Toys (on Graco® Baby Einstein® discover and play™ Activity Centers) Units: About 40,000 Manufacturer: Graco Children’s Products Inc., of Exton, Pa. Hazard: The plastic covering on the soft block towers can detach, posing a choking hazard to infants. Incidents/Injuries: Graco has received 137 reports of infants mouthing and chewing pieces of the plastic film covering, some of whom required medical attention. Serious incident reports include 32 infants who gagged and 49 who choked on the plastic covering. Description: The soft block tower is a stack of three different shaped stuffed fabric blocks in red, yellow and blue. Pictures of apples, fire engines, ducks, bananas, birds and blueberries on the blocks are covered in plastic film. The soft blocks are one of nine toys that snap onto the tray of the activity center. Only model number 4635BEE with serial numbers 012705 through 063005, which indicates the manufacture dates of January 27, 2005 through June 30, 2005, are included in this recall. Model and serial numbers are located underneath the activity center’s tray. Sold at: Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), Babies “R” Us, Toys “R” Us, Meijer, Shopko, Target, and various specialty retailers nationwide, and on Wal-Mart.com and Target.com from February 2005 through about December 2005 for $80. Fall Hazard Prompts NHTSA, CPSC and Evenflo to Announce Recall of Embrace^TM Infant Car Seat/Carriers

Name of Product: Evenflo Embrace^TM Infant Car Seat/Carriers
Units: About 450,000
Manufacturer: Evenflo Company Inc., of Vandalia, Ohio
Hazard: When used as an infant carrier, the handle can unexpectedly release, causing the seat to rotate forward. When this happens, an infant inside the carrier can fall to the ground and suffer serious injuries.
Incidents/Injuries: Evenflo has received 679 reports of the handle on the car seat/carriers unexpectedly releasing, resulting in 160 injuries to children. These reports include a skull fracture, two concussions, cuts, scrapes and bruises.
Description: The recall involves Evenflo Embrace^TM Infant Car Seat/Carriers made before April 8, 2006. The recalled car seat/carriers have model numbers beginning with 317, 320, 397, 398, 540, 548, 549, 550, 556, 597, 598 or 599. The model number and production date information can be found on a white label on the bottom of the carrier and on the top of the convenience base. Models beginning with “5” are units sold with the travel system (compatible stroller). “Evenflo” is on the carrying handle and car seat base. Embrace^TM infant car seat/carriers made on or after April 8, 2006 are not included in this recall.
Sold at: Department and juvenile products stores nationwide sold the car seat/carriers from December 2004 through September 2006 for between $70 and $100 when sold alone and between $140 and $200 when sold with a compatible stroller.
Manufactured in: United States and China
Remedy: Consumers should not use the handle until the repair kit has been installed. The product can continue to be used as a car seat when secured in a vehicle. Contact Evenflo to receive a free repair kit that strengthens the handle latch. Recall notice will be sent to all registered owners of the recalled product. The recalled units should not be returned to the retailer.

Safe Kids Canada announces the release of a new bilingual DVD entitled Kids that Click -

Keep Your Kids Safe on Every Ride, tips for using car seats, booster seats, and seat belts safely. The new DVD is part of Kids that Click, a program that educates parents on how to choose and use car seats, booster seats, and seat belts safely, sponsored by the Hudson's Bay Company (Hbc).

The DVD provides clear instructions on how to install car and booster seats and is endorsed by the Canadian Paediatric Society. Along with visual checklists and medical testimonials, the DVD provides simple, step-by-step demonstrations of how to install car seats and booster seats and use the seat belt safely. Information in the DVD is suitable for all families across Canada.

"We know that many parents worry that they are not installing their child's car seat or booster seat correctly," says Allyson Hewitt, executive director of Safe Kids Canada. "This DVD gives parents the important information they need to keep their child safe in the car and they can watch it in the comfort of their own home."

The release of the DVD is in conjunction with the first United Nations Global Road Safety Week. It is expected that hundreds of initiatives will take place worldwide, and will be lead by governments, nongovernmental organizations, the United Nations, private sector companies, and others working to make roads safer.

Review 1:

Wow is all I have to say! What a fantastic read. I've done this backwards, I admit that I haven't read "Knocked Up", but having read Wiped, I will certainly be reading "Knocked Up" sooner rather than later.

Rebecca Eckler writes a fluent, well paced book. It is set up as a journal which makes it easy to put down, a must for busy Moms! I found myself compelled to always pick it back up as soon as I could for a little read here and a little read there. It definitely was my fastest read in a while.

Eckler's honesty and "to the point" style allows the reader to really understand her life as a new Mom. she says it like it is and I do value that in a person. She doesn't hide the "crazy" thoughts she has or the embarrassing situations she goes through which certainly allows other Moms to identify with her. There are some jaw dropping moments along with some out loud laughing moments found throughout this book.

I highly recommend this book to any Mom who is looking for a light read about some light and some not-so-light topics regarding motherhood and life.

Review 2: I just finished reading a great book called “Wiped!: Life with a Pint-size Dictator” by Rebecca Eckler. The author takes us through her real life experiences raising her child from the newborn stage through to her daughter’s second birthday.

It is a great book that takes a refreshingly frank look at being a mom. It reassures us that it is ok to have bad days and not every moment with your child is a perfect one. I particularly liked her “10 mommy moments that people forget to tell you” at the beginning of each chapter. If found myself nodding and thinking “that is so true” every time.

This book is really an easy and enjoyable read that kept me turning the pages. I couldn't’t wait to see what Rebecca was going to experience with her daughter next. Having both a toddler and a newborn, I found that I could relate to so much in the book. There were parts that made me cringe and parts that had me laughing out loud. It is nice to read an honest account of what being a mom is really like.[Photo]
Review 3: I read Rebecca Eckler's first book, Knocked Up
Confessions of a Hip Mother-to-be, well.... when I was Knocked Up! It was Christmas 2004 and I remember it vividly, as six weeks earlier, I had suffered the unexpected death of my mother. I needed something, anything to pick me up and gobbled up the book over a weekend!

When I was sent a copy of Wiped! Life with a Pint-size Dictator, I was feeling, well... Wiped!!!!, as life with a pint-size dictator can do that to you!

I was happy that what I liked about Knocked Up, is the same thing that I like about Wiped! I love Eckler's frankness and honesty about life as a mom. From her struggle with postpartum depression and life as a new mom Eckler lets you into her world.

There were laugh out loud parts, and parts where I could picture myself doing the same thing as her! As she was trying on her pre-pregnancy jeans, I wanted to scream... "Don't do it!!!" As all new moms know as, Eckler points out ;Size matters: “I had made the mistake of trying on a pair of pre-pregnancy jeans, which I couldn't’t get up past my knees. It was the worst decision I have ever made.”

Health Canada advises women & children to limit their consumption of canned albacore tuna

In more food news....Health Canada is expanding its consumption advice related to mercury in fish to include advice for specific groups on eating canned albacore tuna.

While Health Canada has a standard for mercury in fish that is among the most stringent in the world, occasionally some fish products may exceed this standard and therefore Health Canada has provided consumption advice for some groups. Today we are updating this advice. However, Canadians can rest assured that there is no reason to stop eating canned tuna.

Data collected by both Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency over several years have shown that levels of mercury in most canned tuna are well below Health Canada's standard. Levels in canned albacore tuna are higher than levels in other types of canned tuna, but are generally below the standard as well. Health Canada's standards for mercury in fish and consumption advice are based on overall dietary exposures; occasional consumption in excess of the recommended amount will not put the average consumer at risk.

As a precaution, Health Canada is providing the following advice.

Women who are or who may become pregnant, or who are breastfeeding can eat up to four Food Guide Servings of canned albacore tuna each week. One Food Guide Serving is 75g, 2 ½ oz, 125 mL, or ½ cup.
Children between one and four years old can eat up to one Food Guide Serving of albacore tuna each week.
Children between five and eleven years old can eat up to two Food Guide Servings of albacore tuna each week.

It is important to note that canned albacore tuna is not the same as canned light tuna. Canned light tuna contains other species of tuna such as skipjack, yellowfin, and tongol, which are relatively low in mercury. Canned light tuna also tends to be lower in cost relative to albacore tuna. Based on lower mercury levels, Health Canada does not consider it necessary to offer any consumption advice specific to canned light tuna.

Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide recommends at least two Food Guide Servings of 75 grams (½ cup) each week of fish. Choose fish such as char, herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines and trout.

Health Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, will continue to monitor the levels of mercury in fish available for sale in Canada and will inform Canadians about any changes to its advice related to fish consumption and mercury.

Baby Food Recall

This US Baby Food Recall, extends to Canada, as there are many locations where you can buy and we know a lot of cross-border shopping mommies!

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is closely following an announcement by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about certain jars of Earth's Best Organic 2 Apple Peach Barley Wholesome Breakfast baby food. There is a risk that this product is contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. Toxins produced by this bacteria may cause botulism, a life-threatening illness.

The U.S. FDA has confirmed that there were no direct retail sales to Canadian consumers of the recalled product. However, this product has been available through internet sales. The CFIA is warning the public not to consume the product.

There have been no known illnesses reported in Canada or the U.S. linked to this product.

Toy Recall:Fisher-Price 'Laugh and learn' Bunny

'Laugh and learn' bunnies pose choking hazardFisher-Price has recalled more than 28,000 "laugh and learn" bunny toys sold in Canada because the pompom noses could come off and pose a choking hazard to small children.

There have been no injuries reported to date.

The 25-centimetre bunnies are yellow with one green and one orange ear, and have a three-dimensional pink pompom nose.

The recall includes about 1.2 million bunnies worldwide, but the company said it sold about 21,000 English bunnies (models K0468 and K5862) and 7,568 French bunnies (model K2965) in Canada.

The bunnies were sold across the country from May to December for about $20 each.

The company is offering buyers a $20 voucher if they have one of the problem bunnies.

CONSUMER ADVISORY - CONSUMERS CAUTIONED TO INSPECT POWDERED INFANT FORMULA CANS

OTTAWA, February 9, 2007 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Mead Johnson Nutritionals are advising the public that some cans of Mead Johnson powdered infant formula found at a single Zellers store in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan have been tampered with.
A total of two suspect cans have been reported at that store. The cans were found to have puncture holes which were concealed by the label.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Consumers using powdered infant formula products should look under the label to inspect the cans for signs of tampering.

CFIA is conducting an investigation of the suspected tampering and the case is being referred to the police.

Mother Hen expands in Ontario - Organic and Natural Baby Food

When our little guy was starting to eat solid foods last year, we used Mother Hen along with making our own.

It was convenient (and yummy), but it was also hard to find here in York Region, but we are happy to let you know that Mother Hen has announced that their new line of Ecocert-certified, organic and natural baby foods will debut in Ontario this month. To be available at many grocery stores and Shoppers Drug Mart locations across the province.

There is also a great variety of choice as there is over 25 food purees and meals, ranging from traditional favourites to more exotic flavours such as mango puree or Sunny Fruit sauce with mango, bananas and pineapple. All Mother Hen products are free of added sugar, salt, starch or preservatives.

Mother Hen’s fruit, vegetable and meat products are available in packages of six (each serving is 59ml) and retail for a recommended price of $5.49. The Mother Hen meals are available in packages of four (each meal is 118ml) and retail for a recommended price of $7.99.

Just an FYI that Once Upon a Child in Newmarket has moved into it's new location.

You can find them at 130 Davis Drive, in the Prenatal Plus Pregnancy & Parenting Centre.

It's a bright and airy space, with lots of room for new and used products. When I stopped into today, they let me know that they are now looking for Spring items!! $30 Million Dollars for Heart

As a family who is deeply touched by heart disease, specifically Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in both adults and children we are excited to announce that today that the SickKids Foundation today announced the largest gift in the history of The Hospital for Sick Children and the largest philanthropic investment in children's cardiac medicine and research in North America.

Arthur and Sonia Labatt pledged an historic $30 million to SickKids with $25 million establishing The Labatt Family Heart Centre and a $5 million endowment that furthers their support of the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre.

Named in honour of its founding supporters, The Labatt Family Heart Centre will provide state-of-the-art care to children with congenital heart disease, the most common birth defect and leading cause of birth-defect related deaths worldwide. The Centre will play a key role in educating the next leaders of cardiac care delivery in Canada and around the world, and research programs will focus on both congenital heart disease and the early origins of adult onset heart disease. "

Arthur Labatt co-founded Trimark Financial Corporation, now AIM Trimark Investments, one of Canada's largest mutual fund companies. He was elected to Fellowship of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in March 1997. Highlights of his volunteer activities include directorships at SickKids Foundation, Parkinson Foundation of Canada, Canadian Opera Company, Young People's Theatre, Toronto French School and the African Medical and Research Foundation. In October 2004, Mr. Labatt was installed as Chancellor of the University of Western Ontario, a position he continues to hold today. For his outstanding business and community leadership, Mr. Labatt was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in July 1996.

Dr. Sonia Labatt is an Associate Faculty Member at the Centre for Environment at the University of Toronto. Both her teaching and research focus on issues of corporate environmental management. Dr. Labatt's volunteer activities included directorships at the National Ballet of Canada and the Wellesley Hospital Foundation. She also was a director of the Art Gallery of Ontario and co-chaired Havergal College's 'Fund for Tomorrow' campaign. Currently, Dr. Labatt is a director of World Wildlife Fund Canada, sits on the Dean's Advisory Board, Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Toronto and is a member of the Board of Trustees at SickKids.

We're helping to "Raise The Barre"

It may be freezing outside, but on February 22, it's gonna be hot in Toronto!!

We are happy to have had the opportunity to donate a big basket of baby goodies to the silent auction for Canada’s National Ballet School for the Raise the Barre – Havana Heat.

This year's Raise the Barre will be a Cuban-flavoured fundraising event hosted by NBS graduate and former National Ballet of Canada principal dancer Veronica Tennant, on Thursday, February 22, 2007 at the Academy of Spherical Arts, 38 Hanna Avenue.

For the winter-weary, this second annual Raise the Barre event offers a variety of intriguing activities. Card sharks can test their skill – and luck – at the Texas Hold ‘em poker tournament. Wine connoisseurs can indulge in a wine tasting seminar hosted by a professional sommelier.

The silent and art auctions will give guests the chance to bid on an assortment of luxurious lifestyle items and gift packages as well as a selection of contemporary art sure to suit all tastes, budgets and living spaces.

Cha Cha Cha with Salsa Babies

We are having so much fun in our Salsa Tots class from Salsa Babies -- and will write more on that later! (and will hopefully have some pictures!)

I wanted to share with all the new moms and mommies-to-be some video, so you can get an idea about what Salsa Babies is all about.

Breaking the Good Mom Myth: Every Mom's Modern Guide to Getting Past Perfection, Regaining Sanity, and Raising Great Kids

I was so excited when I found this book by Alyson Schäfer in my stocking! (Thanks Santa!)
I've already read the book once from cover to cover and have started reading it again -- this time with sticky notes and a pencil!
I've caught Alyson's show on Rogers from time to time and from what I've seen it's a great show, with advice and help for parents. Alyson is also the resident parenting expert on the CBC's "The Gill Deacon Show" on CBC.

In Breaking the Good Mom Myth, Alyson tackles 8 myths about today's modern 'good' mother, including, the myths that "Self-Care is Selfish", "My marriage Can Wait" and my favourite, "Good Mothers Make Life Fun and Entertaining".
This is an engaging book, set to help new moms, as well as old pros and I recommend this great (Canadian) book and am going to file on my bookshelf under "U" for useful!

So, today my little guy bit another child for the first (and hopefully last time). It was totally mortifying and I felt so bad for the little one and the mom. There was no skin broken, but still -- not good! We handled it by a time out, and apology to the little girl.

And when they left a big talk to the toddler by mommy and daddy.

We didn't post about the original consumer's report, as we heard from many sources that it wasn't good report and that the reports were based on US models not Canadian.

Magazine Retracts Child Car Seat Danger Story

One of the world's most trusted magazines came out with a startling study on the perils of using some car seats for your kids.
Consumer Reports indicated the restraining devices weren't as safe as some parents had been led to believe.
But now, in a stunning reversal that's highly embarrassing for the non-profit publication, the editors have been forced to retract their original story.
It turns out the tests were conducted at higher crash speeds than the authors originally claimed. The earlier contention had the seats failing "disastrously" in impacts of 60 kilometres an hour.
But now Consumer Reports indicates it has since received new information from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the speed of the tests, which may actually have been closer to 110 km/h.
Therefore, the publication admits, the tests can't be considered accurate.
Transport Canada had assured all along that the standards on the seats in this country were different from their U.S. counterparts, and there was nothing for parents to fear. As it turns out, it appears they were the ones who got it right.
Here are the seats that were in question but now seem to have been cleared:
